One of the main differences between writers and academics, for Elbow, is theyr representation in classrooms. He explains that in many instances reading is placed above writing. Another main difference is the audience for which writers and academics produce writing for. In Elbow's classroom writers works are more personal. They are written for the writer or at most the other people in the classroom. For academics they know beforehand that their writing will be judged by other academics and therefore proves less personal.
